How to Submit a Website to a Directory and Get Accepted (Step-by-Step)

Published February 3, 2026 2 min read By FreeSiteBackLink Editorial Team

Directory submissions still work in 2026, but only when the listing is real, relevant and correctly prepared. Because we manually review every site submitted to FreeSiteBackLink, we see the same avoidable mistakes week after week. Here is the checklist that gets you approved the first time.

1. Make sure the page is finished before you submit

The number one rejection reason is an incomplete website. Before submitting, confirm:

  • No "under construction" banners, placeholder text or broken layouts.
  • Every menu link resolves — no 404s on About, Contact or core pages.
  • The site loads over https:// with no mixed-content warnings.
  • A working contact method exists so a reviewer can verify you own it.

2. Submit the canonical URL, not a random sub-page

Send the homepage you actually want ranked (for example https://example.com), not a deep blog post, a tracking link full of query parameters, or the www and non-www variants mixed together. If both versions exist, pick one, set a redirect, and submit that.

3. Write an honest, specific description

"The best widget company in the world!" tells a reviewer nothing and reads like spam. A description that states what you do, for whom, and where is far more likely to be accepted and to rank, because it contains real keywords naturally:

Example: "Hand-roasted specialty coffee subscription service based in Leeds, shipping whole-bean and ground coffee across the UK."

4. Choose the single most relevant category

Do not tick every category that could loosely apply. Pick the one that fits best. Mis-categorised submissions look like directory spam and are frequently rejected. If your business genuinely spans two topics, the homepage goes in the primary category and a relevant internal page can go in the secondary one.

5. Understand the backlink requirement (and reciprocate honestly)

Some directories, including our free backlink service, ask you to place a link back so the exchange stays balanced and legitimate. If that is the case:

  • Place the link inside real content or a clear "resources" section — not hidden in white text or a footer farm.
  • Keep the agreed anchor text intact.
  • Leave it live for at least the committed period before requesting verification.

We verify reciprocal links automatically, so a sincere, permanent link beats a hidden one that gets pulled a week later. Hidden or removed backlinks are the fastest route to suspension.

6. Be patient through review

A human should look at every submission. Quality directories take days, sometimes weeks; services that promise "instant approval on 500 sites" are almost always link farms that can hurt you. When a directory is doing its job, the approval wait is the point.
